The final product will be assembled on site on Friday so there are no pictures of how it will look yet. However these watercolour paintings were done to give an idea of how the final structure will appear with and without people around it

Whilst we changed the design to save on the number of bottles we would needwe still needed somewhere in the region of 850. To obtain this number of bottles we went searching through the recycling bins outside Bar One. We needed to do this several times before we had enough to make the full structure.

The site

This is the site we have been given in Barnsley. It is the open space outside one of the entrances to the new Barnsley Interchange. The site has a slight slope to it and is partially covered by the roofing of the Interchange. It is a fairly busy site with most people moving into the building rather than away presumably to catch trains or busses

The design process

Whilst we liked the idea of the bar to make it a decent size would have involved collecting over 1 thousand bottles, something we didnt think we would be able to do in the time frame. To overcome this we changed our design to create a wall that seperates different conversations to kep them private.

After talking amoungst ourselves we decided that there needed to be some sort of focal point to the whole idea rather than some rather randomly placed seating. To try and create this we looked back at the idea of a bar that D1 presented as their idea for the design competition.

At first we looked at using the blocks to create seating spread around the site. We basically were just looking at different shapes that could be created out of the building block

So we started off with a block of bottles which we were going to use as a building block.

About the material and shapes

It's quite difficult to think about a fantastic shape that glass bottles could make. At first we thought we can use string to tie the bottles up into some shapes, but it's not doing perfect. For instance we couldn't tie the bottles up into a firm triangle because the force will make them move to the worng shape. Collecting the material was not hard for our group, initially we wanted to gather ther glass bottles as much as possible so that we can use them for experiment. Although the bottles were all for drink, they are quite different in shapes and colors. The green one is the most beautiful one I think. The bottles cannot be cut or bended, that is a problem for us because we cannot ensure that the final model is full in creativity.

We always try to make a 3D model, so different angles will give the audiences different fellings. That's really cool!

After we tested our ideas on the glass bottles for many times. We decided to stick the bottles together for the competition. So we were going to think about the shape and function of this accumulation.

James was testing the loading of the original seat

This was the original shape of the seat which was made of glass bottles.

Then during the construction period we agreed with the model which was made by Robin.

Robin was working hard with his model.

Accually we just used the super glue, glass bottles and a piece of glass to make such a seat. We have to ensure that the seat was safe for seating on, so the structure must be fairly strong. Lately we won the competition, but this model isn't that perpect for us, we are just on the way.

The thinking period

The D1 group experiment with different ways of holding bottles together. The dbasic idea of stacking them in some way was quickly adopted by both groups but for different ideas. The D1 group looked at using mortar, cable ties, string and all purpose sealant.

The group also found a way to cut the glass using a glass cutter in the Chemistry department. An effort had been made to cut the glass using string, nail varnish and cold water. The technique is to soak the string in nail varnish, tie it round the bottle and burn it. Once its burnt properly put the bottle in cold water and the sudden chnge in temperature cause a crack which should simply break the bottle. This worked but the cut wasn't neat enough to be used effectivly.

F2: After we've been to the factory in Huddersfield, we started to think about the use of glass. When we came back to the studio with lots of glass bottles which were brought from the bar, we started experencing with these bottles.

These bottles are all we've got.

Now the experience has started. We were tring to draw out our ideas and test it.

After we've got some ideas, we were trying to work them out. The most common idea was to stick the bottles together.
